Keyword selection
If you don’t target the right keywords, your web site will perform poorly in search engines. Planning and research will help you designate precise keywords and phrases that bring in targeted traffic.
Keyword Usage
When I say keywords, I am not only talking about the text you put in the Meta tag of your pages. Keywords are all major terms and phrases, which describe the content of your site. Optimized body text is all about how and where your keywords appear. Accuracy is more important than repetition or volume.
Title Tags

The <Title> tag is text that appears as the name of your browser window. In search engines and directories, the <Title> tag is used for linking to your URL and is usually the most prominent feature of your listing.
Header Tags
These are the headlines and subheads in your body text. Search engines determine the “focus” of a particular page largely based on keywords in your headers. Most important are the <H1> and <H2>.
Meta Tags
Meta tags are less significant then they used to be in early days of SEs. Altering Meta tags alone will hardly help you gain better search rankings. It has to be done in conjunction with general SEO.
URL and File Name
Your web site URL appears in the address bar of your browser. The shorter and more specific keywords it contains, the better.
Anchor Text
Anchor text is the text used in links pointing to or away from your web site. Anchor text is the ideal place for placing keywords and phrases.
Inbound Links (link popularity)
The number and quality of hyperlinks pointing to your web site has a significant impact in having good search engine rankings. The more and better links you have coming in, the more important your site is considered to be.
External Links
If a particular page on your site lacks outbound links it may be under-performing in terms of SEO. Quality and relevant external links can improve your search rankings.
Text Features
Features of your body text like Boldness and Italicizing affect how your web site ranks in search results.
These are some basic SEO terms that you need to familiar with to make sense of this SEO mambo jumbo!
